11. City Coordinator
EI with the support of Wipro Ltd. is conducting a study of holistic student development in 5 metros namely Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. The study will cover English medium schools, specifically those which are perceived as ‘good’ schools. The study will try to identify factors or parameters that contribute to the holistic development of students and the extent to which good practices in these contribute to imparting better quality of education.
This study expands a project executed jointly by Wipro and EI in 2005-06 which looked at the quality of student achievement in leading schools in 5 metro cities of India and was published as a cover story in the India Today magazine. 13. Chief Information Officer/Head of Technology
EI is looking for a young, technically brilliant person who can lead its technology team to help achieve the vision of helping every child learn with understanding.
Educational Initiatives is a 9-year old organization working with private and government schools by creating effective assessment and learning solutions. EI works or has worked with Google, the World Bank, most leading private schools in India, the Dell Foundation and many state governments in this area.
EI’s core strength is a deep, data-driven understanding of how students learn. It involves knowing, for example, that grade 4 children think that 3 cm is a point, rather than a distance and that grade 8 students know that the chemical formula of water is H2O but are not able to correctly deduce the chemical formula of pure steam. By understanding such micro-issues in learning based on data, EI recommends or devises micro-solutions, partly through its intelligent adaptive learning product, Mindspark.
The Role of Technology:
Insights into learning come for a deep understanding of the topic, detailed studies with students and collection of large-scale data. But delivering the solution will be impossible without technology. We are not talking here of basic technologies like video or computers, but cutting edge solutions involving computers being able to mimic the abilities we normally associate only with human teachers. Using technology, a solution once found can be adaptively provided to children across time and space; millions of children can be engaged individually and patiently; voiceovers can be provided to children who are not able to read (a big problem in our government schools); and there is significant cost-effectiveness at scale.
The solutions using technology may range from the apparently mundane (for example, a technology to automatically read out a question to a child in the child’s own language) to the extremely intelligent (for example, a system detecting when a child is getting bored or frustrated or unchallenged and automatically not only changing the level of difficulty of the exercises, but verbally giving emotionally appropriate feedback).
CIO / Head, Technology:
It is useful to consider the role and goal of the CIO / Head, Technology of EI in the context of all the above. We are looking for a very bright individual who is extremely passionate about the ability of technology to transform significantly. At the same time, the fundamental passion is solving really tough problems – with technology being an exciting tool for the same. We are not looking only for an brilliant individual player, but a leader who can inspire and challenge a team – hence the person should have managed a team, successfully, for at least 3-4 years. (The current team is about 10 members and this may double or triple over the next 1-2 years.) A degree in Computer Science would help, but we know there are many people around whose passion makes up for that qualification. A degree from a premier institute in India or abroad would also be a strong desirable.
Over 10,000 students use EI’s online learning system and over 300,000 use its assessment products. The EI team currently works on a PHP-MySQL platform and also uses Flash-based technologies. However, other technologies including Flex, AIR, Java and various AI techniques like natural language processing are used as required.
The ideal candidate would love solving tough problems and inspiring and helping others to do the same. An exposure to Artificial Intelligence and/or formal qualifications in that subject would also be a valuable addition as interactions with the Computer Science departments of the IITs and other premier institutes would be expected.

17. Teacher Trainers
Educational Initiatives’ mission is to significantly improve the quality of learning in schools the world over by developing innovative, research-based products.
India has a large number of teachers and principals (the practitioners) and it has educational experts (the theorists) - but it probably lacks a layer of educational technologists (those who understand the theory, try it out in practice and modify it). These educational technologists marry a good understanding of theory with a bias for action. EI attempts to provide that layer for India’s educational system.

Job Profile:

Senior professionals are needed to lead the effort of these development teams- typically in 2 ways-

Job Description
This is a position of significant responsibility, as the head of all financial matters for the company. This position will offer a lot of scope for learning, exposure and growth to areas such as managing cash flows and investments, active MIS, statutory compliances, etc.
- Day to day financial management, accounting and internal control
- Managing cash flows and investments
- Budgeting and MIS, tracking on a regular basis, reporting to investors on a monthly basis
- Oversight of all statutory compliances including RoC and other compliances, and taxation matters including IT, service tax, sales tax/VAT.
- Ensure all agreements being signed with schools, vendors, contractors and agents are compliant with tax laws and are internally consistent
- Getting annual audits and periodic audits done

Desired Profile
- Should be either a CA or an MBA Finance (from a reputed institute) with at least 3-8 years' work experience in Corporate Finance

Should either know, or be capable of quickly learning issues like ESOP taxation and accounting policies, revenue recognition on projects, working with IT teams to integrate Tally to proprietary systems, etc.
